Karen Vellutini, Vice President Sales & Marketing, provided the closing remarks at last month’s Women in Maritime Leadership Conference.  The conference was attended by industry professionals as well as by those interested in pursuing a career in the logistics and maritime industry.

Last night, the Port of Oakland’s Board of Commissioners gave the final approval to turn 180 acres of the former Oakland Army Base into the largest in-port, state-of-the-art logistics center.

The port has partnered with CenterPoint Properties to develop a $52M logistics facility, which will, in Phase I, offer 440,000sqft of warehousing, cross dock and rail transload opportunities.

This logistics hub is a key component in the port’s long-term growth plans and will bring additional container volumes and jobs to the port.  For more information on this project click here.

From Behind the Dock Doors

ecommerceSpeed to consumers is all the rage, and ecommerce companies like Amazon.com are driving significant industry change.  Gone are the days of having two or even four distribution centers throughout the country.  Amazon has 89 and is planning to open 7 more this year.  In an effort to speed delivery to an instant-gratification society, Amazon is now partnering with the US Postal Service for Sunday deliveries.  The Sunday service started last month in New York City and Los Angeles and will expand into Dallas, Houston, Phoenix and New Orleans early next year with other cities to follow.

Behind the Dock Doors

Reno, NV has always been a hub for distribution, but it has expanded significantly in the last few years.  Why?  There are myriad answers.  Its proximity to major east/west and north/south freeways providing easy access to consumers in the eleven western states.  Its low or zero tax rate structure.  Its diverse labor force.  Its affordable cost of living and favorable lifestyle.

If you’re thinking of relocating or expanding to Northern Nevada and taking advantage of all the area has to offer, we would welcome the opportunity to be your 3PL service provider.
