The last penny was struck on November 12, 2025 at the US Mint in Philadelphia. The penny had been in production since 1793 and its demise follows the half-penny, which ended production in 1867.
Due to their copper and zinc content, a penny costs 3.7 cents to make.
The final pennies minted will not go into circulation but rather will be auctioned off and the money given to the US Treasury.
