With Memorial Day weekend this month, it has us thinking about ice cream. YUM! But, then there is the brain freeze. What causes it?
According to neuroscientists, brain freeze is caused by the sudden cooling of the roof of your mouth. This cooling leads to the restriction in the blood vessels of your mouth. That restriction leads to your body pumping blood to your brain to keep it warm, which leads to the expansion of the blood vessels. That fluctuation between constriction and expansion causes brain freeze.
To avoid it, you can eat your ice cream more slowly and take smaller bites. If you end up with brain freeze anyway, try drinking something warm or pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
