Vessel alliances are beginning to adjust services to avoid the US Trade Representative (USTR) Chinese-built ship fees, which will be implemented on October 14th. The Premier Alliance, ONE, HMM and Yang Ming, have already begun to swap out vessels.
The ship tax applies to all Chinese-built ships but is higher for Chinese-owned and operated ships.
Chinese-built ships will see an $18/ton or $120/container fee, increasing $5/ton or $40/container each year until 2028. Chinese-owned ships will see a $50/ton fee and $30/ton increases annually.
