July 5th is the only day of the year members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) will not perform work of any kind on the US West Coast waterfront.

Why? Because it marks a labor riot in San Francisco in 1934 culminating in the death of two protesters. It was also the birth of the ILWU.
