Fresh on the heels of the 60 Minutes report on the theft of more than $1M of Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar’s Santo Tequila, Shaquille O’Neal’s custom $180,000 Range Rover was stolen in transit to Baton Rouge LA. In the tequila case, the thieves impersonated trucking company personnel and spoofed GPS data to intercept the cargo. In the Shaq case, the thieves compromised the trucking company’s system and rerouted the driver. In both cases, drivers were convinced to deliver the cargo to an alternative delivery location.
These heists made a splash in the news, but, more importantly, they revealed the growing problem of cargo theft and demonstrated the sophisticated methods nefarious actors will employ to steal your cargo.
Given these high profile cases, it is not surprising cargo theft has increased 1500% in just four years to an $18M per day problem. Expensive merchandise is not the only target. In fact, the most commonly stolen commodities are food and beverages.
Please be careful out there, and we will do the same.
