Since I-580 was constructed in Oakland in the early 1960’s, there has been a ban prohibiting trucks from transiting the freeway through Oakland and San Leandro. In fact, the original ban dates back to 1951 and supersedes the freeway. But, the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) is conducting a study on eliminating the restriction. The end goal is pollution reduction. The study is expected to be completed in the next 12-18 months.
