Seven years ago, Wanda Dench sent her grandson a text regarding the Thanksgiving dinner details. Turns out her grandson had changed his number, and the text went to a complete stranger, a high school senior, Jamal Hinton.

Jamal returned the text asking who it was, and Wanda replied, “Your grandma” complete with an elderly woman emoji.

Jamal was skeptical and asked for a photo. Wanda complied. Jamal sent a photo of himself saying that she wasn’t his grandma but asked if he could get still get a plate.

Wanda replied, “Of course you can. That’s what grandma’s do…feed everyone.”

Jamal showed up for that Thanksgiving dinner…and every Thanksgiving since.
