The technology for autonomous vehicles was birthed in California. California was the first state to pass comprehensive legislation authorizing the operation of fully autonomous vehicles on public roadways. San Francisco was one of the first cities in the world to deploy driverless taxicabs. Yet, the California legislature put forth, and passed, a bill banning driverless trucks in the state.
Governor Gavin Newsom, however, vetoed the legislation citing it as unnecessary as existing law already creates the needed regulatory framework.
